What is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Male breast reduction surgery (Reduction Mammaplasty) is the leading and exceptionally successful procedure performed to reduce the size and volume of male breasts through the excision of excess fat and glandular tissue.
The condition of abnormally enlarged breasts in men (Gynecomastia) can affect one breast(unilaterally) or both breasts (bilaterally). It is usually caused by the body’s production of surplus glandular breast tissue or a combination of excess fat and breast tissue.
Several factors can magnify the symptoms of enlarged male breasts such as hormonal changes, genetic conditions, and specific medications.
Although it does not pose a serious health threat it can be damaging to a patient’s emotional well-being.
Gynecomastia surgery can safely and effectively treat and help men with gynecomastia regain their confidence and sense of manhood. If combined with liposuction it can further enhance the appearance of the chest, improve aesthetic definition and appearance of pectoral musculature.

What Does a Gynecoplasty Surgery Involve
Reduction mammaplasty is usually performed under IV sedation or general anesthesia, either in a hospital or out-patient surgical facility. It typically lasts one to two hours.
The specific technique for your procedure may vary. Excision technique is recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed, the nipples repositioned, and the areola reduced.
Liposuction techniques are used when gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue.
Sometimes gynecomastia is treated with both techniques, excision, and liposuction according to aesthetic desired results.
Recovery
Following your Reduction Mammaplasty, you can expect mild to moderate bruising, swelling, and discomfort for which you’ll be given prescription pain medication as well as antibiotics to reduce your risk of infection.
A small drain may be temporarily placed to facilitate the removal of excess fluids.
Bandages or dressings will be applied to your incisions and a support garment may be used to minimize swelling and support your new chest contour.
Bandages are usually removed within a week after the surgery, they should remain clean and dry until your first follow-up appointment. Until then, sponge baths are recommended.
Plan to take a week off from work to rest and recuperate.
You should refrain from moving your arms above your shoulders and limit physical activity as well for a two week period in order to allow your body sufficient time to heal.
Risk
Gynecomastia surgery is a safe, predictable procedure. As with any surgery there are risks and complications. While these are rare and unlikely, they should be discussed with your plastic surgeon during the consultation process.
Results
The results of gynecomastia surgery are typically permanent.
Gynecomastia surgery results are immediately visible, they will continue to improve over the following weeks as incision sites heal and fade, and swelling decreases.
Your improved and sculpted chest you will ease you into physical activities and social interactions, heighten your confidence, and enhance your overall quality of life.
